Ensuring Safety: A Comprehensive Guide to Essential Fire and Safety Equipment

Whether you are working in an office, restaurant, hotel, or warehouse, every workplace is required to have some essential fire and safety equipment. According to the UK government requirements, every business owner has a legal responsibility to ensure that their work premises have all the required protective equipment installed and are maintained in full working condition daily.

Let’s take a look at the list of things one must have to keep everyone safe at work and be compliant with the law:-

FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS:- if a fire happens, there must be a certain system to notify everyone in the area about the danger. So, installing fire alarm systems should be wireless or hardwired. Each fire detection system has multiple pieces of fire equipment, such as:

·        Smoke detectors

·        Heat detectors

·        Fire bells that produce a loud ringing noise

·        CO detectors

·        Manual call points allow any person to activate the fire alarm manually

·        Sprinkler systems

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:- Your workplace will be more subject to certain classes of fire depending on the particularity of your work and the building itself. There are five types of fire extinguishers to counter the specific requirements of each fire class:

·        Water-Fire Extinguisher

·        Foam Fire Extinguisher

·        Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extinguisher

·        Dry Powder Extinguisher

·        Wet Chemical Extinguisher

FIRE EXIT SIGNS:- Every workplace should have at least two clear-cut escape routes that are marked with fire exit signs. These fire exit signs must be properly visible and placed over every window and door, as well as along the escape route, to direct people to the exit in the event of a fire emergency. If the room is filled with smoke, the exit sign must be visible in the dark and provided with LED lights.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING:- Another fire safety equipment that helps in solving the evacuation process is the emergency lights. They are designed in a way that even if the main power supply is down, one can remain inside the place/room for several hours (minimum 3 hours),

OTHER FIRE SAFETY SIGNS:- In addition to fire exit signage, your work premises must also have some fire safety signs and notices. They let u know how to use the fire equipment and what the fire emergency evacuation plan is.

FIRST AID KIT:- No matter how well prepared you are for an emergency, you should be able to offer first aid to anyone who has developed an injury.
